Topic: License costs
Hi,
I have a question and I did some searching here but I couldn't find any answers.
I read you are 'dishing out' a lot of API keys to iPhone developers. I'm (trying to become) another iPhone developer, and I would be interested in using your API (because I haven't been able to find a good movie app and the official IMDB app is not available in the Dutch app store).
Now I have been programming stuff 'for myself' in the past and then I gave it away for free on the internet. Since I now have an easy opportunity to ask (a little) money for it on the app store, I would like to do so ($1 or $2 seems reasonable for a quality app).
However, since it is the app store, you don't know what's going to happen. It is very likely I will sell about 10 copies (to my friends
) and then it'll get lost in the huge pile of apps on there.
Now if that happens, technically, I wrote a 'commercial' application - I ask money for it.
Scraping IMDB is not allowed, and their license fees are insane for this kind of 'commercial' situation, so my question is: what would you want in return from me if I would use your API? Do you have a license plan for something 'commercial' like this?
- The app could disappear in the huge pile of apps, I would make nothing, you would notice nothing on your servers. I couldn't even pay a license fee if I wanted to - I'm a one man project with no financial back-up. ![]()
- I could make a fairly successful app, make some money, but not nearly enough to afford an IMDB style license. Would you be more reasonable than IMDB?
- It could be another app store gold rush success story (not likely...), but then the themoviedb database would be crucial to the success of the app - It would only be reasonable to share that success ![]()
What do you think?
